On July 13, NOVA Medical School hosted the Jubilee Lecture of Professor Carlos Filipe, entitled "Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar".
Following the academic tradition associated with this milestone, the Full Professor reflected on his personal and professional journey, sharing the experiences, encounters, and influences that shaped his thinking and his understanding of Medicine. In a speech marked by gratitude, he paid tribute to the family members, mentors, colleagues, and patients who accompanied him throughout more than four decades of his career, affirming that "the true richness lay in the journey, not in where I arrived."
Throughout the lecture, Professor Carlos Filipe reflected on the challenges facing medical education and the role of universities, highlighting the importance of preserving academic identity, the relationship between teacher and student, and the humanistic dimension of Medicine. He also argued that innovation and new technologies should serve to enhance the quality of education, while safeguarding memory, critical thinking, and the values that underpin medical training.
In his concluding remarks, he expressed his confidence that NOVA Medical School will continue to educate future generations of physicians while preserving its heritage, values, and humanistic tradition. "Keeping the memory of the past alive and building the future upon it," he said, invoking what he described as the "Spirit of Santana."
A psychiatrist and specialist in Clinical Neurophysiology, Professor Carlos Filipe is a Full Professor at NOVA Medical School, where he led the Medical Physiology course and, until his retirement, served as Coordinator of the Integrated Master's in Medicine. Throughout his career, he conducted research in the fields of Physiology and Nervous System Pathophysiology, while also contributing to Clinical Neurophysiology, Psychopathology, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
