NOVA Medical School co-organises event dedicated to the future of Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials

18-Sep-2026

NOVA Medical School, through the NOVA Clinical Research Unit (NOVA CRU), is co-organising the PtCRIN's CTU Impact Day – Strengthening Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials, in partnership with the PtCRIN – Portuguese Clinical Research Infrastructure Network. The event will take place on 18 September 2026 at the Rectory of NOVA University Lisbon.

The event will bring together researchers, healthcare professionals, clinical research experts, patient scientific societies, regulators and policymakers to discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials (IICTs), as well as the contribution of Clinical Trial Units (CTUs) to strengthening clinical research in Portugal.

The programme will explore key topics shaping the future of clinical research, including the evolution of academic clinical trials, decentralised clinical trials, the use of secondary data for research within the framework of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), innovation driven by CTUs, and the development of scientific communities equipped to address the evolving challenges of clinical research.

The event will feature experts from leading national and international institutions, who will share their experience and perspectives on emerging methodologies, innovation and collaboration in clinical trials. The programme includes plenary sessions, opportunities for direct engagement with Portuguese Clinical Trial Units (CTUs), and panel discussions bringing together representatives from key organisations within Portugal's clinical research ecosystem, including INFARMED, CEIC, AICIB, the Clinical Academic Centers, the Lisbon Society of Medical Sciences, and patient representatives. A dedicated session will also showcase and discuss clinical study proposals, culminating in the presentation of the Best Interventional Clinical Study Award, recognising the most outstanding clinical study design.

Through this initiative, NOVA Medical School reaffirms its commitment to advancing clinical research in Portugal by fostering collaboration across institutions and contributing to the development of a stronger scientific community capable of leading high-quality investigator-initiated clinical trials.
