The only summer camp at a medical school is back

18-Mar-2024

After the success of the 2023 edition, NOVA Medical School is once again opening Summer Medical School: Lifestyle, a medical school summer camp focused on promoting healthy lifestyles, based on four fundamental pillars: nutrition, physical activity, mental health and science.

This program offers a variety of workshops, lectures and hands-on activities designed to inspire and motivate participants to adopt healthier lifestyles - giving them the theoretical, but above all practical, skills to do so.

Hands-on workshops in the Kitchen Lab - where they learn how to cook their own meals, outdoor exercises, activities focused on mental health - self-care and understanding the science behind food - are some of the guarantees offered by this program, which provides authentic immersion, crucial for lifelong health.

For young people, Summer Medical School: Lifestyle is also an experience in learning the most transversal skills in the areas of Medicine, Nutrition Sciences and Research, in an immersion that will allow participants to embark on exciting moments - with a scientific program led by a team of renowned professionals in the various areas

The program takes place in July and is aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 14 and young people between the ages of 15 and 18. With the ambition of reaching everyone, this year, for the first time, a specific program has been created for higher education students from Portugal and abroad, with two very specific courses: Culinary Medicine and Health, Technology & Innovation.

"NOVA Medical School, as a medical school, has played an important role in society, not only in training doctors and nutritionists, in research and knowledge transfer, but also in reaching out to the community with actions that can have an impact on the health ecosystem. With this program, we have created an opportunity for experience, which allows for immersion in lifestyles that we have been able to prove - through the previous edition - have an impact on the lives of these children, young people and their families," explains Conceição Calhau, NOVA Medical School's deputy director for community outreach.

For the youngest, the program can last from one to three weeks (between July 1 and 19). For young people, the offer is one week (from July 23 to 26). For students already in higher education, the experience takes place in the last week of the month, with all the sessions taking place in English, since registration is also open to international students.

There are a total of 48 places for the younger program (16 children per week), 25 places for the 15-18 age group week and 30 places for students in higher education.

This summer program aims to change behaviors by transferring the knowledge generated in academia to the life of the community, creating an opportunity to transform the health ecosystem.
Registrations are open until May 15, with special prices for the first registrations, and can be made on the NOVA Medical School website.
