Ana Isabel Santos elected to EARA's Board

Ana Isabel Santos, Professor of Nova Medical School, has been elected to the Board of the European Animal Research Association (EARA), at its recent General Assembly.

EARA is the communications and advocacy organisation that represents both public and private institutions in the biomedical sector and its use of animals in scientific research. Its mission is to inform the public and media about the continued need for, and benefits of, the humane use of animals, by providing accurate and evidence-based information.

Ana Santos, who is Past President of FELASA (Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations) comes on to the Board at a crucial time for the biomedical sector, following calls by the European Parliament for an accelerated phase-out of research using animals.

EARA executive director, Kirk Leech, said: “We are delighted that Ana has joined the Board of EARA. Her expertise on animal welfare issues and the broader EU issues that affect animal studies will be invaluable to us in this challenging period".

“The aim of EARA is to explain to EU decision makers and to the wider public that while it is essential to develop non-animal methods of study, this should not undermine the ability of scientists to carry out research where there are no alternatives to animals yet available.”
