Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics is a quantitative and statistical technique to measure indexes of production and dissemination of knowledge, as well as to monitor the development of various scientific areas and the patterns of authorship, publication and use of research results.

NMS Library supports bibliometric reporting and user support.

NMS scientific output '24

NOVA Medical School (NMS) scientific output is a quality indicator of the scientific activity of the institution. Based on a search validated in PURE on june 2025 (778 publications), the metrics are presented of the articles, review articles and conference articles (534 publications) for 2024.

Open Access in NMS '24

Open access publishing is playing an increasingly central role in the scientific and academic landscape, reflecting the importance of democratizing knowledge. The NMS is no exception and publication in this model has been growing.

Scientific Output NMS '23

NOVA Medical School (NMS) scientific output is a quality indicator of the scientific activity of the institution. Based on a search validated in PURE on May 2024 (797 publications), the metrics are presented of the articles, review articles and conference articles (547 publications) for 2023.

Sustainable Development Goals '23

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are assigned per publication and the terms considered come from the title, keywords, abstracts and subject areas of the journal, with indexing being done automatically by Elsevier in PURE.
Of the total number of publications in 2023, only 283 were classified as SDGs and from these, 257 (91 per cent) are associated with SDG 3 - Health and well-being.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT OF NMS SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION

Since 2010 the Library is the institutional focal point for the collection and validation of scientific publication references of affiliated authors at NOVA Medical School.

The bibliometric sector collects and keeps the data updated through an information management program on scientific research in the several Organic Units of UNL. At institutional level it’s the bibliometric sector of the Library that answers questions and supports research in this context.

BIBLIOMETRY

Bibliometrics is the branch of documentation and information science that applies mathematical and statistical analysis to bibliographies, consisting of the statistical analysis of books, journal articles and other publications, i.e., data on publications (articles, citations, collaboration...).

The evaluation of scientific production is fundamental for the recognition of researchers and institutions and is based on bibliometric indicators.

Bibliometrics answers questions such as: Who is citing (how many times) my articles? Which are the best journals in the field of Internal Medicine? In which journal should I publish my work? How to know if a given article is important?

ALTMETRICS

Altmetrics are alternative metrics to more traditional ones such as citation-based bibliometric metrics, such as the impact factor. The interest of altmetrics analysis is the scientific dissemination of research results in the context of the social web and its resources, evaluating, for example, mentions in news portals, blogs, social networks, and reference managers. Citations in scientific articles usually occur among scientists (bibliometric indicator) which differs from mentions in a social network.

These are new measures, new ways of measuring impact, based on non-traditional outputs. It is not about replacing traditional metrics, but it can be complementary to the traditional citation analysis.
