NOVA Medical School professor leads Portugal's first living-donor robotic liver transplant

05-Aug-2025

Professor Hugo Pinto Marques, Director of the Hepatobiliopancreatic and Transplantation Center of the São José Local Health Unit, led the first fully robotic living donor liver transplant in Portugal - an unprecedented feat at national level and only the second in Europe.

The surgery, carried out at Curry Cabral Hospital (ULS São José), involved two teams operating simultaneously with two surgical robots, allowing for a minimally invasive approach that ensured greater safety and a speedy recovery for both the donor and the recipient.

According to Professor Hugo Pinto Marques, this procedure “is a milestone that demonstrates the potential of robotic surgery to improve clinical results and patient recovery in the National Health Service”.

NOVA Medical School congratulates Professor Hugo Pinto Marques and the entire team for this extraordinary achievement.
