Professor Pedro Póvoa was elected Dean of NOVA Medical School by the Faculty Council on October 8, 2025.
Professor of Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine and current Coordinator of the ICU4 at São Francisco Hospital (ULSLO), Pedro Póvoa's mission will be to strengthen the School's academic and scientific excellence and shape its future based on the vision “School of the Future: Innovative, Inclusive, and Global” over the next four years.
“It is a tremendous honor to lead a school that has made its mark on medical education in Portugal. We want to continue to grow with innovation, rigor, and a sense of mission, training professionals who truly make a difference in people’s lives,” says Pedro Póvoa, Dean of NOVA Medical School.
With over 35 years dedicated to medicine, teaching, and research, Pedro Póvoa combines clinical experience, strategic vision, and national and international scientific recognition. Ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide in the field of intensive care medicine (PLOS Biology, 2024), the elected director is the author of a vast scientific output and collaborates with international institutions such as the D'Or Institute for Education and Research (Brazil) and the University of Southern Denmark (Denmark), reflecting a collaborative and evidence-based approach.
With a PhD and Associate Professor in Medicine from NOVA Medical School, Pedro Póvoa stands out for his commitment to excellence in medical education and his vision of a modern school, open to the world and deeply connected to the community.
