NOVA Medical School and Adexo celebrate 20th anniversary of National Obesity Day with commemorative event

18-May-2024

NOVA Medical School and the Portuguese Association of People Living with Obesity (Adexo) will celebrate National Obesity Day with an Official Ceremony dedicated to the 20th anniversary of obesity being recognised as a disease. The event is scheduled for 18 May 2024, between 10am and 1pm, in the Sala dos Atos at NOVA Medical School.

The ceremony will be attended by a representative of the Ministry of Health, who will chair the event.

Classified as a chronic disease, obesity is defined as an excess of adiposity that is harmful to health, characterised by considerable complexity, and is a risk factor for other pathologies.

In Portugal, it is estimated that 67.6% of the population is overweight or obese, according to October 2021 data from the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Studies, Evigrade-IQVIA and the Portuguese Society.

Faced with a statistic of this magnitude, it is becoming increasingly important to mark this day, thus promoting a space for reflection and action in the search for solutions to address the problem of obesity in Portugal.
