NOVA Medical School launches the most competitive edition of the International Master’s in Biomedical Research

NOVA Medical School has just opened the most competitive edition of the International Master’s in Biomedical Research (NOVA Biomedical Research – NBR), led by researchers Paulo Pereira, Rita Teodoro, and Cláudia Almeida. With a strong global and multidisciplinary profile, the program brings together students from Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain and the United States. The inaugural session featured a conversation moderated by Rita Teodoro and Paulo Pereira: An Invitation to Science: a conversation with Thiago Carvalho*.

Designed to foster both scientific excellence and professional growth, the NBR combines solid knowledge with analytical and problem-solving skills in a truly international learning environment. The program is distinguished by its focus on individual interests, personalized mentorship, and continuous feedback, ensuring each student’s academic and professional development.

The curriculum offers four areas of specialization, aligned with the student’s research thesis: NeurosciencesAging and Chronic DiseasesOncobiology, and Regenerative Medicine. Students also have the opportunity to undertake laboratory rotations and thesis projects at leading international institutions, further enhancing the program’s global dimension.

Thiago Carvalho studied biology at the University of São Paulo, Campinas (UNICAMP). He obtained his Ph.D. in immunology at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC, Portugal) and completed his post-doctoral training in immunology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Thiago has extensive experience in science education and communication, having served as the Head of Graduate Programs at the IGC, Graduate Studies Coordinator at the Champalimaud Foundation (Portugal), associate curator of the Gulbenkian Foundation’s “Darwin’s Evolution” exhibition (2009), senior scientific editor at the Journal of Experimental Medicine (New York), and senior writer for the Director of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Thiago wrote the “COVID-19 Research in Brief” and “Clinical Pipeline” columns for Nature Medicine and produced podcast series for EMBO and the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus (Munich). Together with David del Alamo, Thiago creates and delivers scientific skills training through their company, Fellowsherpa. He is currently working at the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunobiology as Head of Education, Training and Events.
