Obesity and depression: exploring the roots of shared biology & behaviour

As part of the celebrations of World Obesity Day, NOVA Medical School organizes a symposium focused on the relationship between obesity and mental health, on April 19th, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, in the Sala dos Actos, with free entry, but need registration.

Harriët Schellekens, professor in the department of Anatomy & Neuroscience (University College Cork) and principal investigator at Food for Health Ireland (FHI) and APC Microbiome Ireland is one of the keynote speakers, also as the professor of NOVA Medical School, Gabriela Ribeiro and Albino J. Oliveira-Maia. Expresso journalist, Helena Bento, will address the topic of scientific narrative, from a journalistic perspective with a focus on mental health.

This is an initiative supported by the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO) and is aligned with World Obesity Day, which is celebrated worldwide on March 4th.

Obesityis a chronic disease with increasing prevalence and associated morbidity, mortality and stigma. There is increasing evidence of a complex andbidirectional relationship between obesity and depression which post challengesto the understanding and treatment of both conditions. However, obesity anddepression share common biological pathways that can provide novel insightabout obesity phenotypes.
