José António Belo

Professor Professor Catedrático
Principal Investigator

José António Belo is a Full Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology at NOVA Medical School, from NOVA University Lisbon, where he is also the Coordinator of the PhD Program ProRegeM. He teaches, and is the course director of Cellular and Molecular Biology-MIM, Developmental Biology and Stem Cells and Development.

He is currently the Executive Director for the Research Support Structure, where also leads the Stem Cells and Development Lab within the research unit, iNOVA4Health, at NOVA Medical School.

His group studies focus on the induction and control of myocardium and coronary vasculature’s development, organogenesis and function, using the most up to date technologies in molecular embryology and regenerative medicine. Those include generation and analysis of KO mouse lines, mouse and human ES/iPS cell differentiation and CRISPR/CAS9 technologies. The aim is to understand the aetiology and treatment of Cardio-Vascular Disease, from a Developmental Biology, Genetics and Physiology perspective, with Regenerative Medicine purposes.

José Belo is a founding member of the Portuguese Society of Stem Cells-Cell Therapy (SPCE-TC), from which he is currently the Chairman of the General Assembly.
