The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a fresh water teleost that over the past 30 years has become a powerful animal model to investigate vertebrate development, physiology and mechanisms of disease.
Zebrafish share 70% of our genome and have all major organ systems developed by 5 days. Zebrafish larvae are small and transparent making them ideal for pharmacological screenings. NMS research on chronic diseases uses this animal model to study regenerative medicine and diseases such as, cancer, gut inflammation, atherosclerosis, congenital heart disease, neurological diseases and rare genetic diseases such as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and Autosomal dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.The team responsible for the management and maintenance of zebrafish at NMS is composed by
The NMS Fish Facility currently houses 500 aquariums with capacity for more than 10,000 animals.
Services for drug/ new compound screenings are available.
To have access/ training to use the fish facility you need to have authorised permission.
