NOVA Medical School and University of Mindelo sign cooperation protocol

NOVA Medical School and the University of Mindelo (UM), in Cape Verde, recently signed a cooperation protocol with the aim of strengthening academic, scientific and clinical ties between the two institutions.

The multi-year protocol aims to encourage the sharing of knowledge, the development of joint projects, academic mobility and the practical training of students and teachers in the medical and health sciences. UM's Degree in Orthoptics and Vision Sciences will be one of the main beneficiaries of this collaboration, especially by strengthening internship activities, clinical training and applied research.

In preparation for the signing of the protocol,  the professor and researcher at NOVA Medical School, Sandra Tenreiro, visited the University of Mindelo last March, where she had the opportunity to learn about the structure and potential of the Clinical and Experimental Centre in Vision Sciences - an essential support unit for practical training and the provision of eye care. The Professor was accompanied throughout the visit by the Scientific and Pedagogical Coordinator of the Degree in Orthoptics and Vision Sciences, Manuel de Oliveira, and was received by the Magnificent Rector of UM, Albertino Graça.

During her stay, Sandra Tenreiro also visited the Batista de Sousa Hospital, the Ophthalmology Service, the Health Precinct and two Health Centres in the city of Mindelo, to find out about the local health situation, with a special focus on visual health.

Within the scope of this cooperation, the Clinical and Experimental Centre for Vision Sciences is expected to establish itself as a centre of excellence in the provision of eye care to the community, as well as a hub for scientific research into eye health.
