Obesity is a global problem and 800 million people are living with this disease, with millions more at risk.

Under this year's motto "Everyone needs to act" to improve the understanding, prevention and treatment of obesity in the world, we share the messages of Sílvia Conde, group leader of the Neuronal Control of Metabolic Disturbances: Therapeutic Strategies Laboratory and Maria Paula Macedo and Rita Oliveira, respectively group leader and postdoctoral researcher of the Metabolic Diseases Research (MEDIR) Laboratory.

We know that the microbiota is a determining factor for the development of this pathology that is obesity.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, there are 1.4 million obese people in Portugal - which makes Portugal one of the countries with the highest obesity rate in the European Union.

NOVA Medical School's mission is to provide quality services that are able to make a relevant contribution to the improvement of health care. Given the scientific evidence, which tells us that inadequate eating habits are one of the main determinants of the loss of years of healthy life, it is essential to consult professionals capable of promoting a healthy eating pattern, adapted to their clinical contexts.

We leave here a reflection of our researcher Conceição Calhau:
